Sephora is a popular shopping destination for high-end makeup. There are many cruelty-free options available for those who don’t want to support animal testing. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation when it comes to cruelty-free makeup. In this article, I will talk about what cruelty-free actually means. I am also going to share some recommendations from Sephora.

One false belief is that there is no difference between cruelty-free and vegan products. While many cruelty-free products are also vegan, it’s not always the case. Vegan products do not use any animal ingredients, for example, honey, shark squalene, or eggs.   Cruelty-free means the product was not tested on animals. This means not only does the company not test finished products, but their ingredient suppliers also don’t conduct testing. Also if the products are sold in stores in mainland China they are subject to mandatory testing. The companies have to pay for this animal cruelty, even if they aren’t the ones doing the testing.

Bite is a cruelty-free company that does not have many vegan products. They do not test their products on animals. However, most of their products contain animal ingredients like beeswax and lanolin. On the flip side, Clinique has many vegan products since they are a hypoallergenic brand. However, they sell in China Sephora stores so they test on animals. The Sephora house brand is also not cruelty-free for this reason.

If you are just getting into high-end cruelty makeup, there are several options at Sephora. For foundation, I recommend Urban Decay Naked Skin. It is my favorite because it has good coverage while still looking natural. They also have a great shade range. The Naked Skin line also has great concealers, correctors, and powders. My other face makeup must have is blush. I really like Becca luminous blushes and Too Faced love flush.

Many people getting into makeup are curious about which neutral eye palette is best. I would suggest an Urban Decay Naked palette. There are currently four versions with different tones and color combinations. The one drawback is that they are mostly shimmer shades. If you prefer an all matte palette, you can’t go wrong with Kat Von D Shade and Light. It is a very versatile palette with a variety of neutral mattes. My final recommendation is lipsticks. Urban Decay’s Vice lipstick line has over a hundred colors in a variety of finishes. Bite Beauty also has fantastic lip products in many colors. For a matte liquid lipstick, Kat Von D’s formula has been a favorite of mine for many years.

Shopping for high-end cruelty-free makeup does not have to be a challenge. Sephora has several great options in all categories. Once you are informed about what is cruelty-free, you can feel good about your makeup purchases.
